a clio!
my long time, awesome hilarious friends, sean & brandy sullivan, gave me a freakin clio for my birthday! how about that? i got a clio! i know it came from a flea market in nyc and it is for a public service announcement from 1996 for a partnership for a drug free america (you gotta love irony)by some ny agency--but i still have my own clio. thanks yall!
wine & food festival
i decided this year to try for the wine and food festivals' poster contest. i had some time, and idea i liked and mark and i decide to silkscreen for the competition. well, we didn't win, we got an honorable mention. oh well, win some, lose some. a very talented seth deitch won. congrats bro. great work. anyway, attached is a pic of the idea we had that mark and i screened. ideas get in your head and you just gots to get them out!
big 5-0
on november 26, 2010 i turned a corner. fifty that is. my amazing daughter, tillye turned 21 on the following day, the 27th, so we celebrated with a shuler chalet gathering around the fire pit, rockin hard live music in the garage and blowing up 4000 firecrackers in 10 seconds. sweet! (thanks heather!) it was big fun. the picture here is an undescribably amazing gift my right hand man and design compadre, mark lawrence, created, designed, silkscreened for this momentous b-day. what a great surprise. thanks mark.
big ups!
to eddie white and his amazing group of friends, volunteers, musicians, and on and on who helped make the festival a success. i love working with eddie and his folks and creating the art for his projects. if anybody out there wants some merch, i'm sure you can contact awendaw green and get some. get some! thanks again eddie for letting us be a part of your world. rock on my friend. g

on the way to the wall
on the way to the wall, we stopped to urinate, get some gas, etc. while in the bathroom (and i always take some sort of camera with me, you never know what you will see) i noticed the prophylactic dispenser and their were these 3 items for sale. genuine horny goat weed? never heard of that. must be the new spanish fly. and genuine too. someone wrote in "sexual positions" i guess that they thought it was a voting booth. and the tingler ring: "diamonds are out! give her the tingler ring!" the color/design makes it feel industrial, maybe it was some sort of new flexible metal or something. great illustration though. anyway, they made me laugh. so maybe you will--maybe not.
roger waters "the wall"
last thursday me, robin and our good friends, robin mcadam and david richards headed to atl for the roger waters, the wall at philips arena. if you have a chance to see this show, run don't walk to your nearest cpu and order those tix. i have always loved the album, the wall, by pink floyd so i was stoked to check this out. well as a designer, this was a wet dream. sonic perfection mixed with surreal and stunning visuals, technologically flawless, on a huge scale, this concert kicked some giant ass! the photos attached i shot with my iphone so down't expect much but it will give you a feel for scale. i also included a shot with the house lights up after the wall had been torn down. i am so glad my buddy dave talked me into buying these tix several months ago. it was a true unforgettable experience.

hold your head high
this past friday was the annual aiga-sc inshow awards. we were lucky enough to have several pieces chosen for the show but i am proud mostly of our intern, jay bush, who scored the big best of show-student award for his black crowes poster. i asked him to design it for the show a while back and then him and mark commenced to silk screen it. great job. great work.

rubber worm molds
found these a while back. i remember when i was a kid my dad used to make his own rubber worms by pouring the hot colored rubber into molds like these. these look like some weird chart. the would make great graphs. i thought they were cool, its probably just me.
artist market this saturday
kristen at the music farm decided a couple years ago that we have such amazing craftsmen here in chucktown that the world famous music farm should have a market day. mark designed and silkscreened the poster for the event. head to the farm saturday (10am-3pm) and check out all the cool stuff for sale. the holidays are around the corner and my birthday is in a couple weeks.

more husk
i totally spaced on one of the giant cogs that kept the gears moving with getting husk up and running. buff ross, owner and emperor of alloneword design worked with me and the folks at husk to create the husk website. a stellar job, i must say. sorry for the delayed kudos buff, you know i love ya.
farm to table
opening on monday will be the long awaited debut of Husk Restaurant, the new restaurant from the neighborhood dining group featuring chef sean brock of McCradys fame. this restaurant is the brainchild of chef brock and david howard that celebrates seans' hand-picked purveyors--all from the south. the menu will change daily, depending on the fresh ingredients he has received. we have really enjoyed working with david and sean on the branding and identity of this amazing eating establishment. other premiere folks involved in getting this thing up and running were melany mullens of wagstaff (pr kings), david richards architect (personal friend and a real smart hokie),
and tommy brooks of brooks sign. yall try and visit this place soon, it will be worth it.

back in the saddle
well, i'm back from our outer banks annual fishing trip. we went north this year, chicamacomico, to be exact. first time in 25 years we have stayed there. we thought the fishing was going to be stellar up north but those damn fish went south on us, literally. so i can tell with certainty that we will be back fishing with our friend jay cavanaugh, on hatteras island, on the bite me this spring and next fall. although the fish were not there and the wind was blowing a gale all week we managed to have large, large time. thanks OBX, see you soon.

my main man
here at gsgd i have been fortunate to have amazing employees throughout the years. my main man, senior designer (his title) mark lawrence, has been vectorizing, conceptualizing, drawing, hanging and havin fun over here for many years. recently mark came across a call for entries for the the knology/musc hollings cancer center 3rd annual 5k pajama run/walk. he decided to enter. being the smartest designer here, he came up with the brilliant idea of making posters out of pajama material with a tyvek sheet(just like runners attach to their shirts) pinned to the poster. mark screened the tyvek sheets and made 5 posters to enter. his intention was to produce 50 or so, all by hand. the costs was a minimal and probably equal to what it would cost to print posters. 5 to 8 different pajama pattern flannel material glued to a piece of chipboard. needless to say, he blew the mind of the folks responsible for judging the poster contest. they loved it but did not understand the process at all or how cool this promotion would be. needless to say, he didn't win. i think this idea is amazing and really cool, so i took some pics of the 5 he created and posted them here. enjoy.

equality baby equality
going up this week is the first of 3 billboards we created for affa. the alliance for full acceptance.
these guys are working hard to help people realize that even though we may all be different, we are all human and deserve to be treated that way. a great organization and i was truly proud to be asked to create this series. each billboard has a specific web link to inform and add some humor to this serious subject. our amazing friend and seriously talented writer, jenny badman, was a huge part of this. thanks jenny, for everything. anyway, the 3 boards will not be going up all at once, so stay tuned...

great weekend
glad to be back at it. here are 3 logos we just finished for the great folks at stevens towing company. we also created a tradeshow booth and some cool printed materials that go with it to help these guys keep transport big things. bos smith has been awesome to work with and you know how much i enjoy working on big heavy metal machinery jobs. these guys deal with giant --i mean giant (500-1000 ton stuff) things. the stevens transprot is for their ship, the coastal venture. so, real soon you will see that logo on the bow of this unique shipping vessel. keep moving the big stuff boys.

the relic hunter
spent all day saturday diving the edisto river fossil and relic hunting with an old college friend, gary koger, who has been a professional history relic and fossil hunter. him and i went to a spot he has been before on the edisto and we dove for 2-3 hours. we burnt a couple tanks each and snorkeled in some shallower water as well. from his perspective, we didn't do so well but i thought it was great. at right is a sharks tooth i found in about 8-10ft of water. it is small by most standards, approx 2" tall. found a few of these, gary found a big meg, around 4" tall. we also found, sawfish teeth, ray plates, whale vertebrate, tuna tails, sunglasses, lost key rings, a cell phone and countless other schwagg. it was a fun and educational day. i look forward to more relic hunting real soon.

spotted on google earth?
now this would be a first. to have logo we designed to be photographed from a satellite? it could happen. and it might. its all part of the halloween corn maze where some really smart folks used gps to carve the new identity and slogan into the corn field. pretty freakin cool.
