it's your head

a while back i was way into old helmets. i found one at an antique shop and painted meat on it--you know, a meat helmet. so at that time i acquired a few different kinds from different countries and different wars. Along with one of the helmets i found was this instruction booklet for how to use your helmet. i have included the cover and a couple spreads. the writing is real tongue and cheek--war can be fun - except when your head gets blown off! the illustrations are great and the use of type make this real immediate and easy to follow--just like drill instructors except with out the drill or the instructor. this is a 24 page manual so if you follow this blog i will drop more in at a later date.

the travelers guide

from death to life. this is the cover of an old book i found several years ago. it dates to the late 1800's and is all hand set type letterpress. the cover is beautiful and textured which adds to the mystique of the title. it is pocket size so that you could carry it everywhere. great handmade typography and very modern for the era. gotta love it.

bowling with the rabbi

KKBE, the reform temple downtown, is having a contest with the youth on who can go to the most services within a year. they bowl after sunday school with the rabbi. my wife asked me if i would make a trophy for this annual event and since amy and david pastre had given me a couple cases of old bowling pins, i proceeded to create this 50lb trophy. it turned out pretty cool. one lucky youth will get to keep this award in their house each year. go bowling.

Hair On Fire

my family and i went to the hair on fire art opening at the halsey institute for contemporary art at the college of charleston last night. don't miss this show. it is all about hair and what these artists achieve with this subject matter is inspiring. many folks at the the opening had all sorts of "do-s" goin on.

o boy

i found this old boy scout handbook(circa 1962) a while back and thought it was funny how some kid added spock ears to the classic norman rockwell illustration. also check out the typography for boy scout. pretty progressive for 1962. you will see more of this book.
